Buckingham YFC Rediscover Their Roots - Press Release

For Buckingham Young Farmers’ Club, 2008 sees the club reach a remarkable milestone – its 85th birthday. Now it may seem that for an organisation where members come and go, 85 years is not that old. What makes it extra special is that Buckingham YFC is the oldest surviving Young Farmers’ Club in Britain!

Founded in 1923 by a group of residents from the local area, the club has ridden the storms and survived when many Young Farmers’ Clubs have slowly sunk without trace. Despite a recognised reduction in farming activity in the UK, Buckingham YFC has ensured that there is still a focus on the countryside – the key being to bring in other elements and ensure it moves with the times, whilst still recognising where its roots lie.

This year, the club is launching a “Rediscover Your Roots” campaign to try to contact as many past members as possible. If you were once involved with the Buckingham YFC but have lost touch – whether you are young, old, or were only a member for a short while, the club would love you to get in touch and enjoy the fun once again!

As a celebration of the club’s achievements over the years, and what it has done both for the region and its members, Buckingham YFC will be organising a series of events throughout 2008. The first event is the Dinner & Dance on 1st March to be held in Buckingham at Villiers, The Old Town Hall. Tickets are £30 and include a 3-course meal followed by disco entertainment. Details of the other events are still to be confirmed, so please watch this space!

Not only are Buckingham YFC celebrating the past, but also looking to the future. The “Rediscover Your Roots” campaign is also aimed at the young people of the region, in an attempt to get more of them involved.

At a time when they complain of having nothing to do, the club gives members opportunities to learn new skills, explore the countryside, take part in fundraising events, have responsibility in running the club, meet numerous new friends and even go travelling – not to mention the key ingredient of having a lot of fun along the way! Despite variations in the number of members over the years, the club really has gone from strength to strength and has a very exciting future ahead thanks to its committed members and strong advisory committee made up of ex-members.

If you are aged between 10 and 26 years old, why not give Young Farmers a try? You don’t need to be a farmer to join, so there’s nothing to lose! Come along to a meeting and see what it’s all about!
